ABSTRACT

Coaching is an emerging and evolving field, complex and dynamic, integrating the ideas, theories, and approaches of many theorists and researchers, both past and present. This chapter explores two main categories related to conducting virtual team coaching: competencies specific to coaching; and competencies specific to coaching virtually, that is, virtual intelligence. It discusses the competencies necessary to effectively coach teams virtually. Investigating and gaining an understanding of how business professionals experience a virtual group coaching process not only will explore insights beneficial to the leadership development and group dynamics areas, but also will provide insights into how adults learn in virtual communities. Technology changes have impacted all areas of the business world, including how leadership development options are delivered and that includes coaching. Coaching has emerged as a viable and sought-after performance improvement and professional development option.
