ABSTRACT

On June 8, 2017, I met with milliner Arnold S. Levine at his bustling studio on 8th Avenue in the Garment District in New York City. Levine’s workshop is an eclectic collection of millinery supplies as well as memorabilia from shows gone by. The day I visited his employees were busily working on multiple projects, including hats designed by Bob Mackie for the upcoming The Cher Show opening at the Neil Simon Theatre in November 2018; crowns for a promotional video for an upcoming motion picture about Freddie Mercury; and a yet-to-open Broadway production of Moulin Rouge! with costumes designed by Catherine Zuber. The atmosphere was comfortable and inviting, and Levine was gracious and jovial. If only the walls could talk! I’m sure they’d regale us with stories of Broadway shows gone by and scintillating conversations between Levine and the renowned designers with whom he has worked.
