ABSTRACT

Engaging and empowering students in assessment and feedback is an underpinning value in UDL. This chapter describes how the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education in Ireland worked with staff and students to support more empowering and engaging assessment and feedback approaches. The project commenced by developing a national definition of assessment, of, for and as learning (assessment and feedback). It supported, in particular, the move towards more assessment as learning activities, aligning with the project’s aim to develop students as partners in this process. The diversity and volume of assessment practices across a sample of Irish institutions were explored and linkages were made to the impact of this on student learning. The emerging Irish Professional Development Framework, and more enabling assessment policies, were identified as key drivers for the future enhancement of assessment and feedback practices. The principles emerging from this sector-wide project align strongly with many of the UDL principles.
