ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on many presenting issues and concerns for children and adolescents. It includes areas of particular interest and issues that children and adolescents encounter. Many of these issues are difficult to conceptualize, thus knowledge of up-to-date research and treatment techniques can be practically helpful. Counselors must first understand the presenting issue, and how it manifests within the unique biopsychosocial context of each young person, in order to identify appropriate treatments. Sexual behavior and exploration is a normal part of human development. Defining risky sexual behavior can be somewhat difficult, given that risk associated with sex is largely understood within cultural norms and expectations. Safety or stabilization planning requires involvement, investment, and agreement from a youth and a caregiver when a concern for self-harm or suicidal behaviors is evident. Counselors must also learn to work with, advocate for, and support exceptional children and adolescents. Exceptional children and adolescents are often misunderstood and frequently receive less services from counsellors.
