ABSTRACT

While Sandtray Therapy is supported as an effective intervention for children and adolescents with varying presenting issues, it is important to note that as with any skill or technique, counselors need to be appropriately trained. This chapter provides information and resources useful to the work with children and adolescents. Additional training and supervision is necessary for best ethical practices for any counselor using Sandtray Therapy. There are many aspects to consider when setting up the equipment and preparing for implementing Sandtray Therapy. The tray, the sand, and the types of miniatures all should be selected thoughtfully and with the type of intervention and clients it will be used with in mind. Many supervisors and counselor educators are using sandtray as a form of supervision. The language of play is universal, so play therapy and sandtray can work with every culture; however, it is important to be thoughtful about how culture may impact the dynamics and experience.
