ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with many therapeutic techniques to use with children and adolescents. It presents some techniques such as adventure/wilderness/outdoor therapy, music therapy, yoga therapy, dance/movement therapy, art therapy, and drama therapy. Research supports the use of wilderness therapy in improving “overall functioning of adolescent clients, as well as specifically reducing symptoms of distress related to interpersonal and mental health challenges. Music therapy uses specific music interventions, both instrumental and vocal, to facilitate changes that are non-musical in nature. Yoga therapy can be used in individual, small group, or school settings. Each of these methods of treatment allows for the therapist to assess and create a specific treatment plan for the goals set by the client. Art therapy developed at the junction of visual symbolism and psychotherapy. Many different counseling theories use imagery. Imagery can be a very powerful and effective technique for working with many populations including children and adolescents.
