ABSTRACT

Humanistic psychology has a complex history with multiculturalism and diversity. Despite sharing many values with the civil rights and multicultural movements, humanistic psychology struggled to embrace multiculturalism and diversity. In more recent years, this has begun to change and a strong multicultural movement within humanistic psychology has emerged. This chapter briefly explores the history of humanistic psychology and multiculturalism prior to providing an overview of the purpose and chapters in Humanistic Approaches to Multiculturalism and Diversity: Perspectives on Existence and Difference. We conclude with considerations of the evolving language and approaches within multicultural psychology.
