ABSTRACT

This chapter situates sex work and prostitution third sector organizations (TSOs) in Africa within the tremendous cultural and economic diversity of the region. It explores significant developments with respect to law, policy, politics, and activist organizing within and across the continent’s 54 countries. Following an introduction to the cultural and political dynamics surrounding the work of sex work and prostitution TSOs in Africa, the chapter presents and analyzes examples of TSOs from across the continent. Each TSO example is discussed in conjunction with the work of peer organizations that share its ideological orientation, and this chapter is accordingly structured around the four discrete approaches taken by these organizations: anti-prostitution, sex worker rights, prostitution exit support, and sex worker legal assistance.
