ABSTRACT

With ongoing attempts of the police service across England and Wales to ensure actions are ethical and in line with “Peels” principles of policing, policing as a whole requires both police officers and staff to have the ability to think beyond their own needs and personal, moral values, in order to provide that ethically sound service to members of the public. Despite this, history shows that many key decisions have been compounded by moralistic unethical behaviours and decision making. The introduction of the Code of Ethics (College of Policing, 2014) is an important 21st century development for the police service with the requirement for its principles to be adopted across all aspects of policing, with the associated expectation that all have the right to be treated equitably, with dignity and respect.
