ABSTRACT

Alcohol use is often a precursor to incarceration for more than half of imprisoned U.S. offenders. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) often increases the trauma offenders experience in prison as well as upon reentry because it increases the likelihood of relapse. Challenges associated with prisoner reentry include the need to reform and replace oppressive criminal justice policies of the carceral state that allocate insufficient resources for rehabilitation programs and drug and alcohol treatment programs. This chapter summarizes various AUD programs available in prisons and in the community upon reentry in the context of supportive community resources.
