ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in the preceding chapters of this book. The book sets out to explore, understand, and assess reentry in the 21st century. Moreover, it lends itself to establishing a critical voice within the growing field of social science research. The book highlights, there are many complicated and intersecting issues that make reentry hard. It demonstrates that reentering society is often a struggle to survive. The book looks at how trauma leads to imprisonment, but policies have systematically curbed institutions from providing the services men and women who are incarcerated need. The criminal justice system has poured billions of dollars into surveillance, technology, weaponry, policing, corrections, prisons, and other punitive measures, such as using restrictive long-term housing. Reentry programs need to place a greater emphasis on proactive approaches to equity prior to any form of criminal justice contact or intervention.
