ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the field of inter-American studies, focusing on the transnational or hemispheric dimensions of social, cultural, and political dynamics in history that shaped the different societies and communities in the Americas. It provides a unilateral and homogenous narration of history and society in the Americas from a single perspective. The book deals with selected key concepts that are widely used in academic and cultural–political discussions in the Americas. It also deals with concepts and dynamics in the colonial and early postcolonial periods of the Americas. The book is concerned with inter-American concepts and dynamics of the 20th and 21st centuries that shape the social relations within and between the societies and communities of the Western Hemisphere. It is based on an approach of entangled spaces and histories that has far-reaching methodological implications.
