ABSTRACT

The Focolare Movement is an international Catholic ecclesial community whose charism is rooted in a spirituality of unity. Seeking to build universal brotherhood/sisterhood, the movement engages in various forms of dialogue including dialogue with diverse areas of culture. Known as “inundations,” the dialogue with culture brings the wisdom of the movement’s charism of unity into conversation with fields such as politics, economics, the natural sciences, communication, education, the arts, etc. Reflection on Focolare’s global engagements in these different cultural areas provides some insights for professors of religion and theology who seek to promote a culture of unity in diversity with its associated values in the classroom and beyond. While not specifically sharing in Focolare’s spirituality of unity, professors of religion and theology are well-positioned to share the “wisdom” of their own academic field so as to contribute to a more united, peaceful, and humane world.
