ABSTRACT

In this study, we consider the response to the earthquake by Kathmandu University in relation to its impact, exploring the effects of both on students’ education and the lessons educators can draw from them. Analyzing interview and survey data, the authors illustrate the importance of the students’ role in their home communities and the flexibility of university faculty and administration to support this critical work. The university personnel gave students the time that they needed to serve in their roles in the community without significantly sacrificing learning. Suggestions for future consideration are explored, including psychological support and online learning.
