ABSTRACT

Sensor technology, particularly biosensor technology, has become widely, cheaply available and portable. More than a third of the world’s population owns geolocatable smartphones, which can pair with biosensors so that we can track ourselves in all kinds of ways, in all kinds of settings, and learn new things about ourselves and our environments. Call it the Era of the Spatially Quantified Self. This chapter discusses the antecedents, initial studies, system components, and larger considerations regarding Multimer, a technology that evolved from the MIT Media Lab. Multimer is among the first to examine crowdsourced, quantified biometric data in a spatial, temporal, social, and environmental context.
