ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses children’s perspectives on transitions from preschool to primary school constructed during an action research study in a preschool in Iceland. The oldest children in the preschool were followed as they participated in various transition activities during their last semester of preschool. The study followed the project approach, including the steps of getting started, collecting information about the topic and concluding the project. The children proposed ideas about what they wanted to explore and activities in which they wanted to participate during the transition process. They were asked about what they knew about school and, in turn, what they wanted to know. Then, they participated in various transition activities in order to answer their questions. Finally, they discussed what they had learned and presented their findings to their teachers and parents, who listened to their perspectives and advice. The transition process involved the creation of observations, pictures, drawings and conversations with the children, all of which were important when the project was presented. The children also reflected on the transition process after they started primary school. The findings show that the children considered meeting children at school that they already knew, exploring the school environment and participating in various activities at school according to their interests were important before starting primary school.
