ABSTRACT

Major advantages of duality theory concern the simple derivation of tightly constrained estimating forms and the ease with which testable restrictions implied by the optimization may be derived. While these advantages would appear to be even more useful in intertemporal than in static problems, it is the latter which have so far received the great bulk of attention. One reason for this may be the difficulty in generating functional forms consistent with all the implications of the intertemporal theory. This paper reports some approaches to this problem with particular application to intertemporal consumer theory and to the theory of the firm.
