Accessing and analysing police murder files book
This chapter addresses problems of access to, and qualitative analyses of police murder files. It is based on the author's PhD research into patterns and scenarios of masculine homicide and violence across England and Wales. The chapter considers carefully the boundaries of police murder files data and supplements them with in-depth, qualitative interviews with violent men in order to explore violence from a very different perspective; that of the perpetrators as opposed to the police. Whilst the issues discussed in the chapter are of particular importance when researching sensitive topics, such as homicide, they are still of relevance to other criminological research projects. It argues that researchers need to be aware that the data they analyse have undergone social construction and that this affects the manner in which one interprets and analyses the data.
