ABSTRACT

In December 1992, the Canadian Airborne Regiment Battle Group (CARBG) was deployed to Somalia as part of a coalition force (Unified Task Force, UNITAF) led by the United States. The core of the battle group consisted of the Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR), augmented by a number of armoured and service units. On the night of 16-17 March 1993, near the village of Belet Huen, soldiers from the Canadian Airborne Regiment beat and tortured a bound 16-year-old Somali youth, Shidane Arone. 1 About two weeks before, on 4 March, soldiers from the same regiment had killed a suspected Somali thief and had seriously wounded another.
