ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the influence of feminism on mainstream organizational analysis, in particular the extent to which feminist research informs construction of the business textbook. In distilling management research for textbook production organizational change has been one of many developments for consideration by the textbook author. The 1992 edited collection, Gendering Organizational Analysis set out to reveal the gendered character of organizational analysis. In business, commerce or administrative studies, students learn about management and organization through such diverse subject areas as introduction to business, management, organizational behaviour, organizational theory and human resources management. Several key feminist works, indeed the majority of those termed 'influential' by feminist organizational analysts, were totally ignored by the authors of business textbooks. Most North American business students are introduced to specific subjects by way of a textbook. The standard textbook attempts to summarize and explain in simple terms a range of studies, analyses and findings within the field of study.
