ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the attempted transformation of a water utility through the means of a corporate university (CU) initiative. The CU provided the platform for the delivery of organizational development. The chapter discusses the story of what was then known as Anglian Water, the company that has grown into the present AWG. It seeks to explain why the CU has not survived within AWG in any recognizable form. The origin of AWG lies in the creation of the Anglian Water Authority, which served some five million people in eastern England. The main focus initially was on providing the university with its own syntax within the part of the business known as Anglian Water Services, but people from other parts of the group were involved. The company launched its Transformation Journey in 1995 as an action learning programme rooted in the 'extraordinary', aimed at all employees.
