ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the immigration policy developments, paying particular attention to three related issues that have marked the policy debate on immigration. It addresses that the question of the pension system in Luxembourg, as is the issue of asylum seekers and the special regularization campaign of 2001. The chapter provides an overview of the demographic and social features of the immigrant population and the participation of immigrants in public life with particular attention to immigrant activism and participation in political parties, trade unions and NGOs. It concentrates on the public debates on immigration mainly in the media. Migration policy and measures influencing the admission and integration of the immigrant population are intimately connected with the debate on pensions that has been ongoing for the last 15 years in Luxembourg. Luxembourg will face a multiple challenge in the field of immigration and integration.
