ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the steps taken by the Cypriot authorities in order to adopt the acquis communautaire in the main areas covered under the field of social policy and employment. It adopts and implements the acquis in the areas of Labour law, Social Dialogue, Health and Safety at Work and Equality of Treatment for men and women. Legislative harmonisation in the field of labour law has occurred according to the commitments that Cyprus has undertaken during the screening process and at the position paper submitted. The relevant provisions in the legislation, in the light of a decision of the Supreme Court of Cyprus, run the risk of being found by the Court to be unconstitutional. The Supreme Court is the competent Court for issues concerning employment in the public or semi-public sector. The chapter discusses the capacity of Cyprus to adopt and implement the acquis in the field of social policy.
