ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with continuity of identity or identity crises in situations of survival, in particular in the situations facing itinerant or homeless people, who indisputably find themselves in an extremely vulnerable position and are confronted with survival on a daily basis. The forming of specific recognised categories may make identification possible and can set the process of negotiation of personal identity in motion. A wealth of literature on the subject of professional identity insists on the role and the importance of work in the definition of social and personal identity, and on the need to develop specific skills allowing identity to be established and changes in the social organisation to be adapted to. A radical change in living conditions and fast and effective action to help homeless people off the street are the conditions necessary to avoid the institution of a process of identity transformation.
