ABSTRACT

Intelligent Sustainable Cities (INTELCITY) aims to explore new opportunities for sustainable development of cities through the intelligent use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). The INTELCITY network has identified research challenges for urban planning, design, and city management through the innovative use of ICTs. This contribution is concerned with an evaluation of these alternative scenarios for the City of the future by using a multicriteria analysis (MCA), which provides a systematic process for trading off effects of various alternatives, synthesising individual contributions and values. MCA is a decision-making procedure that uses utility theory to compare and rank alternative courses of action. MCA takes into account all the aspects and values involved in a decision-making process, providing all the following benefits: a clear definition of the criteria used in the selection of an option from among alternative solutions; and a weighting of the criteria to be used in the evaluation.
