ABSTRACT

Masculinity, at least in primary schools has shifted, it is shifting and it will continue to do so. And teachers at the chalk face, with the grime, sweat and tears to prove it, will lead the way in supporting the new age. Having taught for nearly ten years in two continents, and numerous different schools, the author witness to how the representation and expectation of masculinity has changed. Masculinity doesn’t just influence an individual’s career path. Mental health takes a beating from masculinity, which is perhaps one of the reasons why the leading cause of death amongst men in the UK is suicide. There are many suffering in silence, which emphasises why talking about mental health in schools is so important. Emma Watson uses a series of anecdotes, outlining the fact that gender inequalities affect men too, which mention serious things such as mental health and suicide.
