ABSTRACT

Insects interface with forensics in three areas, urban entomology, stored-products entomology, and medico-legal entomology. Many of the species are common for urban entomology, stored and commercial, and medico-legal entomology as well. Cereal grains like wheat, oat, rice, and beans attract large numbers of stored-product mites. Soil mites are adhered to the shoes together with the soil they belong to. Oribatida or hard soil mites can be identified from fragments of their carcasses. Mite biology is a reliable proxy of the circumstances surrounding a crime, especially events leading to a homicide, offering leads on provenance, re-location of corpses, and time scales. Police forces have been using sniffer or detection or detector dogs to locate humans, detect human corpses, blood, product of animal origin including meat, fish, honey, dairy products, illegal drugs and narcotics, explosives, firearms, contraband mobile phones, tobacco, or currency.
