ABSTRACT

The field of forensic entomology is typically identified as one of the newer fields in forensic science, relatively speaking. However, looking back through history, the association of insects and death is nothing new, and the basic scientific principles behind forensic entomology have been used since the mid-thirteenth century. The appreciation of insects came long before the formal study of entomology was developed. The experimental setting was simple, but efficient. One of the most significant ecological theories that have provided solid pillars for modern forensic entomology is the theory of succession. Even though the foundations for the field of forensic entomology were laid prior to the twentieth century, it was during this time that great strides were completed in the field. Although the field of forensic entomology is considered a newer field in forensic science, the association of insects and death has been observed for centuries.
