ABSTRACT

This chapter will introduce the reader to the Jenaplan concept, a teaching approach that was founded by the German educator Peter Petersen (OECD, 2012). Key features will be explored and illustrated with case study examples from the author’s setting. Within the Jenaplan setting learning is seen as an ongoing process, guided by a teacher, and based on the individual and developmental needs of the child. This will include a discussion on the implementation of a “pedagogical tact” approach and support reflection on its effectiveness in the development of sensitive child-adult relationships. The author is the director of a Jenaplan school in the Netherlands and draws upon her own experiences to illustrate the concepts being discussed.
