ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the argument through life experiences and those of other students with disabilities at Jawaharlal Nehru University located in India. It focuses on persons having a particular impairment. One can find similar examples relating to persons with other impairments as well. The idea is to bring forth that within persons belonging to one form of impairment, there is heterogeneity that is sometimes accompanied with stereotypes, prejudices and situations characterised by inequality. Competence in a language influences a person’s ability to communicate with others. Some students with visual impairment are unable to participate to the fullest in political activities due to their inability to speak the language(s) spoken by the majority of people in that group. Attitude of certain persons with disabilities towards non-disabled persons can also be characterised by social hierarchies.
