ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the research on science in news from the specialist pages and beyond and considers how science and technology, as well as the associated risks and uncertainties, are covered by journalists. It explains how and where journalists and public relations professionals could work together to help citizens better navigate potentially controversial science and thus more meaningfully engage in democratic and informed debate in the public sphere. The news audience for science is varied in terms of interest in science and relative expertise. The chapter describes some of the problems and pitfalls in the reporting of science and the role that sources play in both shaping the news about science and helping make sense of emerging and controversial science. It shows how risk and uncertainty feature in science news and the implications for the ways in which risk is reported.
