ABSTRACT

The better your listening skills are, the better you are likely to perform at university. More attention tends to be given to writing skills or exam technique than to listening, yet being a good listener will help you to succeed in your Geography degree. In this chapter, we introduce several types of listening: discriminative listening; comprehensive listening; analytical listening; empathetic listening; and appreciative listening. We also focus on the physical, mental and emotional barriers that can prevent you from being an effective listener.
