ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the skills and techniques that you can apply when reading so that you become an effective academic reader. Improving your academic reading skills will help you to succeed at university, as all of the Geography modules that you study will require you to read up on the topic. We explore techniques such as skimming and scanning, and the ‘survey, question, read, recall and review’ (SQ3R) approach, as well as speed-reading. We offer tips to help you to read effectively: where you read; when you read; taking breaks; and being organised.
