ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines imagination as a key concept in curriculum. It addresses misconceptions of imagination as pertaining to the arts and argues its central importance to learning in all disciplines and at all levels including secondary and post-secondary. By drawing on the work of Kieran Egan and Maxine Greene, the chapter argues that imagination fuels critical thinking, creativity, learning, and social virtues. Practical suggestions for infusing imagination in curriculum are also given. This introduction to the concept of imagination in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from two individuals who further explore the relevance of imagination in human lives. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
