ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines Indigeneity as a key concept in curriculum. It approaches curriculum through a lens of Indigenous pedagogy, which considers the elements of pedagogy to be equal and interconnected, and the separation of how something is learned from what is learned, to be impossible. The chapter introduces Indigenous pedagogy through four emphases: relationships and storytelling, language and identity, land-based and spiritual, and community and collaboration. This introduction to the concept of Indigeneity in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from two educators who further explore the relevance of Indigeneity to teaching and learning. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
