ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines poetics as a key concept in curriculum. It asks What is a poem?, Why is it important?, and offers poetics as an approach to curriculum studies. Poetry can invite students to better understand themselves and their experiences in relation to others and the world. Poetry can help us live with hope and wellness. Poetry can help us inquire into curriculum while honouring complexity and attending to language. This introduction to the concept of poetics in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from two individuals who further explore the relevance of poetics in human lives. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
