ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines temporality as a key concept in curriculum. It asks how our lives intersect with time, and how time and curriculum intersect, and whether time and curriculum should intersect. But time and temporality are not the same, time being externally constructed, and temporality being internal. Reconceptualist theory emphasizes temporality over time. Such discussions of temporality in curriculum often centre on the personal, as in the instance of the method of currere. The anchor text in this chapter closes with personal reflections from Indigenous and settler perspectives. This introduction to the concept of temporality in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from two individuals who further explore temporality in the context of human lives in and out of education. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
