ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces and defines complexity as a key concept in curriculum. It traces the history of complexity theory through time and through the disciplines. In curriculum studies, complexity theory is applied in research and practice to pedagogical strategies, curriculum contents, and the role of formal education in social and cultural systems. The chapter ends with a discussion about if and how complexity relates to poststructuralist discourses. This introduction to the concept of complexity in curriculum theory is accompanied by personal reflections on the key concept from an educator and a student who further explore its relevance in human lives. The chapter concludes with some suggested discussion questions for use in curriculum studies courses and by curriculum theory students.
