ABSTRACT

New black majority churches have grown rapidly across London in recent decades but are especially concentrated in certain boroughs – such as the borough of Southwark, which is the focus of this chapter. At least 240 operate in the borough, at which around 20,000 people worship on a Sunday. This shift has dramatically changed the ecclesial landscape and similar shifts are happening in other parts of London and other globalising cities. These new black-majority churches are significant both as a major new aspect of Western Christianity and as a ‘safe haven’ in an often-contested urban environment.
