ABSTRACT

Long a destination for migrants, the East End of London has become one of the most diverse places on the planet. This study of part of the East End, the borough of Newham, shows the dramatic proliferation of new congregations there in recent years. About 350 new churches have started in Newham since 1975, most outside the historic denominations. The rate of foundation has steadily increased. Such ecclesial entrepreneurialism occurs alongside the proliferation of other faith groups, notably Islam, whilst the proportion of those who eschew ‘no religion’ is amongst the smallest in any part of the UK.
