ABSTRACT

Diversity in London is getting more diverse. This chapter explores burgeoning Brazilian congregations, one of the lesser-known aspects of the capital’s churches. Numbering 70 or more, these encompass Catholics and Pentecostals. They illustrate the global spread of Brazilian Christianity. Rapidly growing, they offer both spiritual programmes and support for migrants amidst the pressures of city life. The migration of Brazilians to London tends to lead to heightened levels of religiosity, compared to behaviour prior to migration. However, efforts by Brazilian churches to evangelise those of non-Brazilian heritage have had limited effect whilst they face the challenge of working with the children of migrants who have only known the UK as home.
