ABSTRACT

Foster Care Placement Process and Settings: This chapter begins by examining key considerations in the foster care placement process. Particular attention is given to the role of race and ethnicity in placement considerations as legislated by the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978 and the Multiethnic Placement Act of 1994 and The Interethnic Provisions of 1996. The importance of permanency planning, and its related concept of concurrent planning, leads into a comprehensive review of the types of foster care placements available. Placement types are defined and trends and current research about each are discussed.
