ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the narratives and stories which children and young adults tell and retell of their childhood and their school days. Childhood narrative accounts of the transfer from primary school to secondary school as told by children and retold by young adults, are one such example of a particular kind of narrative, that is the atrocity story or moral fable. The wider curriculum offered at secondary level presents the opportunity for the pupils to encounter a greater number of teaching and ancillary staff than at primary level. The subject specialists, the laboratory and computing technicians, heads of departments, teachers with special responsibilities for pastoral care can provide the pupils with cause for concern. The recognition and analysis of children's stories can provide a real insight into the world of the child and the social construction of adulthood.
