ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the vital role that storytelling plays in the peace pedagogy of higher education. A robust understanding of peace pedagogy has yet to be formalized, and much of what is known about it is framed within the primary, secondary, and war-zone focused discourses of peace education. The chapter deals with background information on peace pedagogy and storytelling, exploring their vital role within Peace and Justice Studies. It also examines storytelling as a tool of peace pedagogy in higher education, drawing from peace education and critical theory. This is followed by an exploration of the underlying issues, controversies, and problems that surround this inquiry. Critical peace education draws from the strength of critical theory, and the work of the Frankfurt School of Social Research, to challenge the dominant ideologies that contribute to systems of oppression, and to encourage strategic actions toward peace.
