ABSTRACT

This chapter examines ethical analyses of the same ecological system under varying spatial and temporal scales. These analyses, informed by intrinsic values and restorative justice, are based on postnormal science and the precautionary principle. Diverse stakeholder values emerge as social-ecological system complexity is revealed. The adjudication of conflicting rights claims requires an ethical analysis of these values as they are revealed at various scale dimensions. Scale-sensitive ethical analyses are crucial for a path forward to sustainability. The importance of an inclusive process allowing facilitated participation of diverse stakeholder groups, the legitimation of intrinsic values in decision making, and the adjudication of rights claims revealed by expanding spatio-temporal lenses in system complexity are at the heart of a supradisciplinary SHES approach that incorporates scientific, social, and ethical analyses.
