ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines how interview and inventories are used to assess the building blocks of schema formulation, which include: schemas, unmet needs, schema acquisition, temperament, coping styles and modes. The processes involved in building a compassionate understanding of the development and maintenance of current problem areas are described. This chapter also offers ways of integrating information obtained via inventories, interview, imagery and chair work into a coherent formulation of a patient’s difficulties; one that also provides a ‘road map’ for journeying towards the patient’s therapeutic goals. Creative means of sharing the formulation, including different forms of mode mapping, are also offered.
