ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the origins of Schema Therapy in terms of the limitations of existing approaches; and how the model blends elements of cognitive-behavioural, psychodynamic and humanistic theory into a unified whole. The theoretical underpinnings of ST are described including core childhood needs, schema acquisition, coping styles and schema modes. The chapter describes different types of schemas and modes; and the basis of limited reparenting and experiential strategies for change. It also provides an overview of the research evidence base to date for different clinical groups and disorders.
