ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the role of key logistical flows and, in particular, how two major powers, the United States and China, attempt to use control over critical infrastructures in the Greater Central Asia region to their power-political benefit. Corresponding linkages and networks – the hub-and-spoke systems of roads, data cables, airports and similar assets – can be rerouted and rewired with major power-political consequences. In a new ‘Great Game’ evolving between the United States and China, the focus is not so much on territorial control. Instead, it is on controlling the key logistical flows and interconnectivities of the region.
