ABSTRACT

Foucault suggests that the self is located at the intersection of governmentality and subjectivity. As neoliberal governmentality unfolds within higher education, essentially for determining the neoliberal conditions, wherein individuals are encouraged to freely conduct themselves as homo-economicus, it would be appropriate to say that the conduct of individuals is critical for the sustenance of such governmentality. This chapter presents a description of how the creation of the ‘ethical subject’ (read teacher) is unfolding in the context of the growing neoliberal shift in the discourse of higher education in India. The chapter incorporates the teachers’ narratives as illustrations to highlight the neoliberal pressures that have transformed work culture and, consequently, the understanding of teachers’ ethical responsibilities in higher education.
