ABSTRACT

This chapter tries to capture a certain spirit of work, and with it conveys Ariane Mnouchkine's ethics of theater work. It also examines how to conduct a mask workshop – mask working being fundamental to her research. This extrapolation of basic principles will also reveal a rehearsal vocabulary that relates to the creative process as practiced at the Theatre du Soleil, and that might serve those who would hope to pursue theater work in the spirit of the company. There are many exercises that encourage community and collaboration. The following exercises from Sotigui Kouyate of the Peter Brook Company, who in the past had given workshops at the Théâtre du Soleil, are very effective in fostering collaboration. Live music is preferable. The musicians must support and enhance the work of the actors; they must be willing to enter into the actions and text of the characters.
